A STARTING NOTE - Keep in mind many of those in the bottom ‘Life Rafts’ list are NOT being used as REPLACEMENTS for Oppo Kinja proper. Most are simply temporary landing sites after Oppo’s demise on November 16th until something more concrete gets decided re: our new home. Right now, Discord is the best place for up-to-date discussion and chat (and is quite active otherwise). DriveTribe or Jminer’s wonderful NodeBB-based test site are also very active and those two are currently near the front as a viable replacement homes.

Hi all - thought I’d make a post I can easily re-post that contains all the links to the various current Oppo ‘life rafts’ that are out there for all of us to sign up to as needed (or preferred) until we find a more permanent ‘Home’.

An Oppo ( ‘Brian, the life of’ ) owns the ‘oppositelock.com’ domain, so feel free to check that out as time goes on. It’s not ready for primetime, but could likely be where whatever our new home ends up being, or at least redirect to it!

Brian, Life of.

I would really love if we could turn this into an opportunity to build a better forum for ourselves. For instance, it would be fantastic if we could have sub forums for perlatiks and other categories where we have only independent blogs now. The other forum I used to spend time in was phpBB based and had that capability. It worked great for a group with zillions of users.

Obviously we have to concentrate on bugging out to somewhere stable, but it would be great if it were able to grow that way.

A forum would make a lot of sense, would give us probably the closest UE to what we have here, maybe even better, since every thread would be grouped into a category that you could jump right into from the landing page. If not that, DriveTribe does seem like a pretty solid alternative.

Question: does anyone know if we are cool to continue to use our Gawker/Gizmodo/GTFO screen names on DriveTribe, or is it a violation of their terms of service to not use your real name?

I kind of like the anonymity, not that there’s anything really bad on here, but I don’t like the idea of someone Googling my name before a job interview or something and pulling up every damn post I’ve ever made.

I think this post needs an edit to show where things seem to be headed, to not overwhelm people with all these different options . DriveTribe appears to be the consensus landing place for now (until we get more guidance from the mods) , with Discord for discussion/chat. Instagram/Twitter are there for info, and the others are also-tans/ backups. The Fb page is really a separate community now, for the most part.

I’m in Florida, the most southeast you can get , half an hour out of Orlando. Sure, a drive to Nashville would be 10 hours or so, but that’s a drive I can knock out in a day (though that is pushing it to my limit haha).

DriveTribe does seem genuinely happy to have us so far... It’s not bad at all, but a lot of us don’t like the idea of being tethered to yet another corporation with a proprietary system, there are quite a few things that some people don’t like I bet the design and posting process on Drivetribe as well.

We could still end up there as a proper home though! Nothing has been decided yet. People seem to really like jm iners test site though, and one could always post on his test site as the main offer and then post things on Dr ivetribe as well! :)

Yeah I’ve been poking around on Drivetribe this morning and it seems as good of a place as any to land. Agree that being tied to a large org is fraught , especially as I’d completely forgot Drivetribe existed since it launched... as has everyone else I suspect.

I really appreciate jminers effort and it does look good, but any independently hosted site is going to have issues that worry me. Specifically ownership of the URL, hosting, moderating, etc being tied up in one person gives a bit of a bus problem, so to speak. Also being tied to the whims of a single person (or small group of people) has both benefits and downfalls when compared to being subject to the whims of a large corp.

Counter-point: I’m completely against the idea of an old- school forum-style forum. I got this rant out on Rusty Vandura’s post, but I’ll cross-post that here since it really explained my experience with the matter:

What I’m seeing in the meantime is that both fulfill the social role, but more of the higher-quality blogs we’ve missed here have landed on DriveTribe by default as it’s the only option so far with a blog format. I’m glad to see the plane posts up on opposite-lock.com in the meantime, but yeah. I really hope the decades-old forum layout is temporary.

I’m hoping the final site we pick ends up much like Oppo now—blogs. The best part of Oppo to me is that it provided a platform for people to spring off of. People have cited Oppo blogs in job applications, for Pete’s sake. No one does that with forum posts, and having known a lot of editors, even if the content was good, I don’t know if they’d take it seriously. I have never pointed to even good forum posts I’ve made as a writing sample for that reason.

We’re going to get a package of blogs anyway (I hope?), so we kind of need that anyway.

Every traditional forum I’m on has had a consistent theme of bleeding membership. I’ve been on moderator teams, I’ve met some of my closest friends, I’ve turned to them for technical advice—but none of them are exactly thriving. People go to Facebook (gross). People hang out on the related Telegram or whatever instead of the actual forum. People straight-up leave to more modern site formats. Getting new people to a forum outside of its existing die-hards—and enough of them to replace those who leave—in 2020 is near impossible. That’s part of what we need to factor in: How do we attract new users, and how do we attract like-minded nerds who don’t suck?

I’m glad we’ve got options in the meantime and I’ve been parking a username on each, but yeah. I check this iteration of Oppo regularly because of the blogs. The more involved updates on builds or life intertwined with silly posts that roll down the same page. I’ve found myself straight-up not visiting forums unless I want specific information or have an excessive amount of time to kill.

I floated the idea of a user forum to Patrick, and he didn’t say no. I think it’d be a ways off, though, as we’re looking at changing blog platforms and it would clearly be The Drive’s reader forum not unlike how Oppo is/ wa s clearly tied to Jalopnik. I’d love to see y’all over there, though. Feel free to shoot him another email and ask yourself, though.

Technically it’s not tied to a single person :P

Jminer’s currently hosting it, but it would be cloud hosted and paid for by multple people, and the URL we would likely use (http://oppositelock.com) is owned by ‘Brian, The Life of’...who will likely let us use it. Jminer’s only using opposite-lock.com because he signed up for it for the sake of testing, which is also the reason he has it on his own server atm...only for testing .

Also, considering it’s a large corp that decided our entire operation is getting shut down with one weeks’ notice and short of the Jalopnik staff sticking their necks on the line to help us as much as they can, has given us no help or assistance to move.....eh....I’d rather stick with ‘We The People’ controlling it. I admit DriveTribe seems very happy to have us and we’ve had a lot of help and comments from their staff, but still....it was a large corp that caused this in the first place, so you can understand my resignation. We’re here for the community, they’re, in an underlying way, as nice as they have been so far, still a business at heart...

Having been in “the business”... the support cases are going to be off-the-charts high... different devices- phones, OS, browsers. Even with Kinja’s “staff” the bug lists grew faster than they shrank.

WADR, I think the problem’s too big to solve on a standalone platform— while satisfying demands for high quality to the Edits-Look-Feel of the product. Certainly too big to solve as a part time, unpaid, gig.... JMHO.

And, yeah, the DriveTribe mobile app isn’t half bad already either.

FWIW, I like the idea of our own site and not being tied to a corporation, etc. Also, I don’t much care for DriveTribe’s layout/format. On the flip side, I can access it from anywhere, while opposite-lock.com is restricted from certain places I would access it from. But I could still get on at home, but I don’t surf as much at home.

It’s a crappy position to be in - use it more on a platform I dislike, or use less on a better platform? Regardless, wherever the community goes, I will follow, and try to participate as much as possible.

Agree and I’ll go with whatever the bulk of people end up at. I know things are very much in flux now, but ultimately to get a “warm and fuzzy” about a “we the people” platform, I (and I assume others) would like to know more specifics about what the underlying platform is (wordpress, etc), where it is hosted, and how it is managed (who pays the bills, admins, etc).

I agree. Kinja was a great home for many years but on a while decided to be done with us. I have reservations about the long term viability of something like Drive Tribe for sure. I think lack of content and traffic might be why they’re so eager to have us. Still, the reduced complexity of it being in someone else’ s hands is nice.

But, again, I’ll likely go wherever we land. Sadly splintering is inevitable and we will lose people in the transition .

I actually really, really like opposite-lock.com. Works fine for me on desktop, mobile, and is surprisingly smooth and intuitive (to me, anyway).

While I use reddit, I already have a dedicated reddit handle there and don’t want to use a second account just for Oppo. The simple sign-up is nice since you don’t even necessarily need an email (unless that changed in the past few years) but I’m personally not a huge fan of a subreddit.

I signed up for mastodon, but it won’t let me log in. I think it was supposed to send a confirmation email but I never got it, and subsequently forgot about mastodon until now. I’ll reserve judgement since I haven’t even seen the UI (and may not ever at this rate).

Drivetribe reminds me a lot of this site - many links to a larger, car-related site, potential for that trickle of growth that Oppo gets when people venture off the beaten path. However, I don’t like that “award” and “drivecoin” stuff that appears on the site.

Medium looks great for long-form and photo-centric posts. Otherwise, it’s simple and clean, although I haven’t tried posting there yet, either.

Twitter/Insta/FB are off the menu for me - I can understand these being supplementary to Oppo but FB died for me in 2010, and I may have an Insta account but I haven’t used it in at least 8 years, and I killed off my Twitter a couple of years ago.

If I find an app/site that really works for me, I tend to stick with it, so I have a heavy lean towards opposite-lock.com

Ultimately, I’ll go wherever we can keep the group alive, but I like the idea of having our own oppo which won’t have to live or die by a parent site’s rules.

Glad I’m not the only one who seriously dislikes the DriveTribe format/layout. I can barely see one post at a time with all the wasted space and humongous images everywhere.

Yeah I could see it working for particular types of content, but it’s too image centric.

I figure I’d get used to it if we all migrated there;  part of the fun of being on kinja is also having the bond which is the collective hate of kinja. I suspect we’d end up replacing one flawed system with another, but I haven’t used DT to be able to judge if it’s better/worse than kinja.

I sort of second this. There’s a lot of quality writing that happens, and honestly, quite a few of the people could do the blogs as actual jobs from quality of content.

Yeah, some of the above have already dropped off the radar at the moment as likely or viable options. The most popular ones by far are Discord, not as a replacement, but for just a nice ‘ hang out and chat space.’ It’s been around for a year or two already, so wasn’t a result of this.

DriveTribe and ‘The Hyphen’ as it’s been nicknamed are the most likely ‘home’ candidates right now, and everybody seems to be taking pretty well to ‘The Hyphen’ already! It’s a work in progress, so a bit buggy, but it will only get better with time! :)

Yeah I still have the discord app, even though I don’t log into that as frequently. It’s nice to have that live chat option, but I generally prefer the forum-type space like we have here and at the hyphen site.

Glad I figured I check out Oppo before the end of next week when I’ll actually have some free time... Or else I’d have missed the train. I’ll check these out, I really like the idea of an Oppo that’s dedicated to nothing but Oppo and not attached to anything else, but Oppo on Drivetribe also sounds great to me!

The more the merrier. For only existing for like....a week, and having been first thrown together in less than a day, it’s certainly buzzing over there!

The DriveTribe is busy as well....most people are using ‘The Hyphen’ as ‘home’ and then posting their more professional, longer-form stuff on new Oppo AND on DriveTribe (as Drivetribe has a wider audience, where we can hopefully attract new Oppos to out little corner of the net! :) )

If you do join us at The Hyphen, don’t de spair if you have issues with registering and registration emails...it’s a known issue. Just turn off any adblockers you have completely and keep trying, you’ll get through! Also, keep in mind that The Hyphen is a work in progess still, so things can be a little glitchy over there. There’s a good User Guide post to read through there to give you the lay of the land! Hope to see you there!

Already registeres and it worked swimmingly! I still have about a week of basically working my butt off on 72 to 96 hours per week, but after that I’m taking some time off and getting my stuff and my photography together, so I can afford to be much more active than right now lol
